Center for Chronic Disease Research and Policy 2022 Highlights: Selected Papers, Grants, Awards, and Achievements

A Year-End Message from CDRP Director Elbert Huang

In October, the CDRP held its 10th Annual Symposium: The Art and Science of Public Health Communication, featuring a keynote lecture by Chicago Department Public Health Commissioner Allison Arwady, talks by Marcia Tan, Jasmin Tiro, and Harold Pollack, lunch, and a poster session.

In September, a team led by CDRP director Elbert Huang and CDRP faculty affiliate Marshall Chin completed the Financial Analysis Research Agenda, a 3-year federal contract with the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Bureau of Primary Health Care.

CDRP faculty affiliate Monica Peek was promoted to full professorship and named Ellen H. Block Professor of Health Justice, appointed Associate Vice-Chair for Research Faculty Development in the Department of Medicine, and elected to the National Academy of Medicine.

CDRP associate director Tamara Konetzka finished work on a landmark 1.5-year NASEM committee study of improving nursing home quality, published several papers on staffing in nursing homes that culminated in presentations in London at a conference organized by LSE and at AcademyHealth, earning AcademyHealth’s “Best Abstract” designation, continued to contribute to research and policy related to the COVID-19 pandemic in nursing homes, through publications and related conversations with media and policymakers, published several analyses on Medicaid home- and community-based services relevant to current policy debates, and published at least six papers with doctoral student or postdoc mentees.

CDRP faculty affiliate Marshall Chin was co-Chair and co-Editor on the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine consensus study report, Measuring Sex, Gender Identity, and Sexual Orientation, published by the National Academies Press.

CDRP faculty affiliate Elizabeth Tung is co-director of Recovery Legal Care, a new initiative by UChicago Medicine and Legal Aid Chicago to provide bedside civil legal help for patients recovering from violent injuries.

CDRP faculty affiliate Mark Siegler received the Inaugural Excellence in Medical Ethics Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine, a Lifetime Achievement in Surgical Ethics Award from the University of Washington Department of Bioethics and Humanities Surgical Ethics Conference, and the Norman MacLean Faculty Award for contributions to teaching and student life from the University of Chicago, and published the 9th edition of Clinical Ethics with Albert R. Jonsen and William J. Winslade at McGraw Hill. Siegler retired this April, after 38 years as founding director of the MacLean Center for Clinical Medical Ethics at the University of Chicago but continues as the executive director of the Bucksbaum Institute for Clinical Excellence.

CDRP faculty affiliate Valerie Press was named Senior Faculty Scholar at the Bucksbaum Institute and became a standing member of the PCORI Subject Matter Expert Reviewer Board.

CDRP faculty affiliate Wen Wan is a co-investigator on the iACTIVATE project and a co-investigator on Voice-Activated Technology to Improve Mobility & Reduce Health Disparities: EngAGEing African American Older Adult-Care Partner Dyads and VIDA: Virtual Diabetes Group Visits Across Health Systems at C3EN.

Grants received in 2022

CDRP faculty affiliate Anna Volerman received her first R01 grant from NIH for iACTIVATE: Investigators Activate via Coaching at the Transition to Independence: A Value-Adding Team Experience.

CDRP faculty affiliate Mai Tuyet Pho received an R01 from NIH for PROMOTE, a study investigating remote harm reduction strategies in rural Illinois communities, part of a new NIH National Institute on Drug Abuse research network to address the drug overdose crisis.

CDRP faculty affiliate Diane Lauderdale received an NSF grant with Co-PI Jonathan Ozik at Argonne National Lab for Robust Epidemic Surveillance and Modeling (RESUME).

CDRP faculty affiliate Vineet Arora received an AAMC grant from Center for Disease Control.
