Eehuanglbert Huang, MD, MPH, FACP  Dr. Huang is the Director of the Center for Translational and Policy Research of Chronic Diseases.  He is also Associate Director of the Chicago Center for Diabetes Translation Research at the University of Chicago.  From 2010-2011, he served as a Senior Advisor in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, Department of Health and Human Services.

Dr. Huang is a general internist who studies clinical and health care policy issues at the intersection of diabetes, aging, and health economics.  His main research focus is in the area of medical decision making for elderly patients with type 2 diabetes where uncertainty exists regarding how to best individualize diabetes treatments based on clinical parameters and patient preferences.  His prior and ongoing research has influenced care recommendations for older patients with diabetes.  Apart from his work in geriatric diabetes, Dr. Huang has also performed other seminal translational diabetes research in the area of cost-effectiveness analysis.  He performed the economic analyses of the Health Resources and Services Administration’s Health Disparities Collaboratives initiative of diabetes quality improvement in community health centers that serve the indigent.  With this one study, he performed one of the first business case analyses from the perspective of the community health center as well as one of the first societal cost-effectiveness analyses of a quality improvement initiative.

Dr. Huang’s research has been supported by the National Institutes of Health, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the American Diabetes Association, and the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.  He has received numerous honors including the Research Paper of the Year Award from the Society of General Internal Medicine and elected membership to the American Society for Clinical Investigation.

Dr. Huang is currently Policy Chair for the Society of Medical Decision Making.  He previously served on the Scientific Sessions Meeting Planning Committee of the American Diabetes Association.

Neda BioNeda Laiteerapong, MD, MS is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at the University of Chicago and joined the Center for Translational and Policy Research of Chronic Diseases as Associate Director of Clinical Outcomes in June 2014.

Dr. Laiteerapong graduated from medical school at Boston University in 2005, completed her residency in 2008 at the University of Chicago, and served as the Chief Resident at MacNeal Hospital until 2009 when she returned to the University of Chicago to complete her fellowship in health services research.

Dr. Laiteerapong is an internist at the University of Chicago who is committed to improving the care of adults with multiple chronic diseases, especially those with diabetes.  Her work focuses on the individualized tailoring of care for adults suffering from diabetes.  Her research has explored how the quality of life in older adults with diabetes is affected by geriatric syndromes, hypoglycemia, and macrovascular and microvascular complications of diabetes.  To examine this area, Dr. Laiteerapong uses data gathered from patient surveys and secondary data sources including pharmacy and health claims by Kaiser Permanente Northern California managed care.  She has also used diabetes microsimulation models to evaluate the effects of delays in achieving blood pressure control in adults with diabetes.  Additionally, she has co-authored articles about the public health implications of bariatric surgery for diabetes treatment and the effects of health care reform on the delivery of chronic disease care.
